Jack Benny Binion
Equity Partner
There are few names more synonymous with the casino and hospitality industry than the Binion family. For nearly 50 years, the innovations and style of Jack Binion and his family led to unparalleled success in the industry..
They developed the Horseshoe Casino in Downtown Las Vegas into a Las Vegas icon, renowned for its high limits, customer service and generous odds. The family cemented that reputation in 1970 when Horseshoe hosted the firstever gambling tournament: The World Series of Poker. In 1994, the family brought the Horseshoe style to the Midwest, and opened the Horseshoe Casino in Bossier City, Louisiana. In 1995, the second Horseshoe Casino opened in Tunica, Miss., and both properties quickly established themselves as market leaders. In 1999, Horseshoe Gaming purchased the Empress Casinos in Joliet, Illinois, and Hammond, Indiana and quickly sparked double-digit increases in revenues at the two properties. The combined Horseshoe properties employed nearly 7,800 trained staff members and generated annual revenues of approximately $840 million. Guests had access to more than 1,100 hotel rooms, 14 restaurants and bars, spas, 2,200 seat entertainment venues and 12,750 square meters of gaming space. That success did not go unrecognized. In September 2003, less than ten years after starting the company, the family sold Horseshoe Gaming to Harrah’s Entertainment Inc. for $1.45 billion. Following the sale, the family took the profits and opened their family office, Pilot Grove Management, LLC. In 2005, Pilot Grove purchased over 2,000 acres of land in the Houston, Texas area and created Airia Development Company. Airia is a real estate development company which manages, operates, and develops residential and multiuse properties for residents and home shoppers from all over the world. The company masterplans the overall area and then develops the entire infrastructure, utilities and amenities a city could want. To date, the company developed and sold over 6,000 housing lots. Airia is currently developing its second master planned community on a second parcel consisting of 2,200-acres. Additionally, Airia is also planning residential and commercial developments on 5,700-acres in the Magnolia, Texas area. In addition to Airia, Pilot Grove remains active in the gaming and hospitality industries with assets spread throughout the country. Today, the Binion Family has $1.5 billion in assets, of which more than $400 million is held in cash.
